History of the Auxiliary
The Fraternal Order of Police
Auxiliary, is an auxiliary organization to the Fraternal Order of Police, the
largest nationwide organization of law enforcement officers. Membership of
the State Auxiliary is comprised of all members of subordinate auxiliaries
within the State of Pennsylvania who conform to its rules and regulations.
There are presently 14 subordinate auxiliaries that belong to the State
Auxiliary in Pennsylvania with a membership of 500.
The Executive Board of the State Auxiliary is comprised of elected delegates
representing subordinate auxiliaries attending a State Conference of the FOP
auxiliary organization. The objective of the State Auxiliary is to
coordinate statewide activities, and to provide a liaison between subordinate
auxiliaries and the National Auxiliary. State Auxiliaries are also
afforded additional voting power at the National Conference in the form of a
representative on the National Board.
The first auxiliary, Fort Pitt Auxiliary, was begun in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
in 1920. What started as a local police wives' group has grown to a
national organization with 5,500 members in 31 states. The organization
was formed with the objective of promoting the welfare of Police Officers and
their families, and creating a feeling of harmony and sociability among them.
Membership eligibility that originally allowed only females as members was
extended to all family and extended family members (18 years of age or older) of
any member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
